WILPF Queensland supports young Timor Leste women

For several years now, WILPF Queensland has made an annual donation towards the education of young women in Timor Leste (East Timor) who are learning skills to help earn an income for their families in the rural villages from where they come.

The women attend the Canossas College, Centru Treinamentu Integral No Desenvolvimentu, in BauCau Timor Leste.  They come mostly from outlying, isolated areas have a little or no education and limited chance of achieving any training that would give them an opportunity to earn money. The students live in at the college for 11 months their classes include hygiene , Health,  Nutrician, Music, computer , business management, sewing, cooking, and much more. They also have an opportunity for work experience in industries such as hospitality, agriculture, health clinics, office procedures.

In 2013, we supported Eldina Julia Freitas, a 22 year old woman
from Fatulia village, sub-district of Venilale, district of Baucau.

WILPF Queensland recommended:

The launch of Breathing: Violence In, Peace Out by Ivana Milojević, an investigation into the long-term impact of trans-generational trauma and the possibilities for healing.

The book explores the links between personal histories and world events and helps us to understand life’s dualities: violence and peace, self and other, stability and change, slavery and freedom. Milojević asks: How does violence change us? Is it possible to change the inner landscape of one’s thinking in the midst of pain and suffering? And if this is our past, how might our future be different?
