Vale Hellen Cooke - brilliant, beloved, indefatigable, a witty and outspoken feminist, passionate peace activist and mentor.

Our beloved WILPF sister Hellen Cooke passed away in on 26 July 2013.

Her passion and indefatigable efforts for peace and justice will continue to inspire us, especially her passion that we understand the principles of permanent peace set out at the first International Congress in The Hague in 1915.

Hellen was also very involved in Women in Black, UNAA, MAPW and established Human Rights groups where she lived near Frankston after she moved from Canberra. She will be greatly missed by all who have known her.

Hellen was only 76 years old, was fit and active and died suddenly. Only the week before her death, she emailed the WILPF board with "some lines for a letter objecting to war games - particularly to bombing the reef. Let me know if WILPF will use them. If not I will do a personal letter."

Hellen's passion for WILPF and her audacity and indefatigable efforts for peace & justice are but a couple of legacies she leaves us. WILPF Australia has lost a true champion.

May our thoughts & prayers bring comfort to her children & grandchildren.

YWILPF writes:

The young members of WILPF in Victoria were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Hellen.

Hellen was an inspirational supporter, friend, activist and role model for all of us, and showed unending good humour in guiding us in the right direction. She was so important to supporting the formation of Young WILPF in Victoria, ensuring that WILPF’s principles and work would be passed down to new generations.

We are eternally grateful to her for this gift. Her words and humour put a fire in our bellies, and we will continue to honour her commitment to activism, to supporting others and to fighting for justice in all that we do.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends as you remember her life, and our love is with you in your grief.
